Worldwide Pinhole Day has come around again and I am posting some more instant film pinholes, as I did last year. These are totally out of sequence for 2016 as I have about 7 rolls of unscanned film in the queue. Since they were shot today, and today is the day, then posting today it is. Does that make sense?
These are made with a pinhole camera that I made by adapting a microscope attachment that has a Polaroid Land 100 back with an f327 pinhole. The camera uses the Fujifilm FP-100C film, which sadly was recently discontinued. If you are interested in the camera, check out my post Making a Polaroid Pinhole Camera.
Getting good exposures is still a challenge for me with the darker scenes. I find with this camera that in brighter scenes if I meter for the highlights then I don’t need to adjust the exposure even though it is well into the reciprocity failure curve published by Fuji. But when it is a bit darker I need to double the exposure time metering from the same place, and the same goes for closer shots of the same scene. When it is quite low light, then doubling does not come close enough – a 4 or 5 minute light meter reading shot at 10 minutes does not cut it. I probably need 20 minutes, at least.
One thing I don’t understand with the reciprocity effect is how to combine it with EV compensation. For instance, if I meter a shot for 4 seconds which requires +1 stop for reciprocity compensation (therefore 8 seconds) but I think my metering should be EV+1 as well, do I then calculate reciprocity effect for an 8 second exposure (+1.5 EV reciprocity adjustment) or do I calculate it for a 16 second exposure (8 sec +1.0 EV). I guess another way of asking the question is when in the sequence of adjustments do I apply the reciprocity vs. EV compensation? If the exposure needs a +1.0 EV compensation, is that ((exposure +1 EV) + reciprocity compensation) or is it ((exposure + reciprocity compensation) + (1EV + reciprocity compensation))? Can you tell I don’t get it at all? If anyone out there does get it, I would love to find out in the comments below.
