Week 8: First roll through the Bronica SQ-Ai

When the father in law of a friend of mine died he left a whole darkroom and a small camera collection. They didn’t know what to do with it so they asked me. And now I’m the proud owner of a fully equipped darkroom and a beautiful Bronica SQ-Ai kit with three lenses. On week #8 I took that beauty out for the first time. I like the results, but I’m not totally sold on the camera. At least with the metered prism it’s a bit hard to use and especially the meter read out is really tiny. But then again, who can argue when it produces results like this?

  1. Quite some nice images you shot. Don’t give up on the camera yet as it might surpise you. I own a Bronica ETRs system and albeit I don’t shoot with it that much, when I do I love shooting even more.

    • I have three more weeks to show from the SQ-Ai and I’m definitely going to give up on it.

But that metered prism really isn’t that great. Much worse that the AEIII on my ETRSi. Shooting with a WLF is much nicer anyway. Well, the split prism in the middle blacks out a lot. So maybe I need another screen … But then it will be perfect. 😉

  2. I’m sure your friends are glad that you are continuing to use the gear! Great shots and enjoy the camera. I had a love-hate relationship with the SQ-Ai, so I passed mine along to Mike Bitaxi who loves it, and it loves him.
