52:500c – Week 24 – The City that Works

I was so excited to be able to include Chicago, one of my three favourite American cities in this year’s project. With some of the amazing architecture in The Loop and one of my favourite skylines ever. But then I got thrown for a bit of a loop. My plan had been to get to the Museum of Science & Industry right for when it opened at 9:30am, that didn’t happen. Then I ended up not leaving until well after noon. I should have just wandered the general area around the museum, gone into Chinatown, explored the near southside (not the actual southside, I don’t have a death wish). But no instead I waited for the 2:10 Metra train that took me out to the Battle of Fort Dearborn Park, and then realised that I was pretty much stranded.

I didn’t have enough time to walk up to the Loop and then catch a train back to the museum where my car was parked, so I headed south, on foot along the lakeshore. Five and a half miles, two hours with twelve pounds of camera kit on my back. So I basically kissed the idea goodbye and went with what I had. I actually ended up really liking these shots because it’s more the side of Chicago that many people don’t see. You’d expect stuff like the John Hancock and Sears Tower, The Tribune and Merch Mart. And those are amazing buildings, but this was a quick side of the city. A park stretching all the way along the lakeshore where families were having picnics on a lovely summer afternoon.

Should I have taken that Metra train, probably not, I should have stuck around the area and had some fun, or even taken my car up into The Loop. But you know what they say, twenty/twenty hindsight. Besides now I have an excuse to go back again and this time bring Heather along to show her one of my favourite cities!

  1. Loved Chicago Too. I lived there for 3 years while I was in Graduate School at Northwestern. The University is in Evanston, but I lived just south of that border in Rogers Park, one block from the lake.

    • There were people around, but by the time I started to encounter them I was out of film and was more interested in finishing the trip back to my car 😛
